María José Pérez Rodríguez, was born in Almería –Spain- in 1985. She is a cantaora or flamenco singer. She started to sing flamenco when she was a child and since then, she has travelled all around Spain. The first thing she sang in front of an audience was a saeta –flamenco palo- to the Virgin of Soledad during a procession in Holy Week. In fact, María José has been a member of this procession since she was a child. She has always loved flamenco and singing something that exists throughout her family.

From that first saeta, she began her career in this difficult world of show business. Little by little she started to enjoy success as she won some of the most important awards at  international level. For instance:

• “Melón de Oro” Award in the Festival Internacional de Cante Flamenco (International Flamenco Festival) of Lo Ferro, province of Murcia, Spain.
• First prize in the festival Jóvenes Flamencos (Young Flamenco Artists) organised by the Federación de Peñas de Sevilla (organisation of all the peñas from Seville) and the Seville’s Bienal de flamenco.
• Premio Nacional de Córdoba Antonio Chacón (Antonio Chacón National Award of Córdoba, Spain).

María José Pérez has represented her province around the most important festivals presently held. She has performed in many different peñas around the Spanish regions, such as Andalusia, Castilla-León, Madrid, Murcia or the Basque country and in a lot of festivals both in Spain and abroad. She has also played with some of the most important cantaores and cantaoras of the moment.

The famous choreographer and bailaor -flamenco dancer- Mario Maya chose her for his show Diálogo Del Amargo. They have presented it in several places in Spain and abroad.

María José’s discography up to now:

• Winner of the VI and VII Concurso Andaluz de Jóvenes Flamencos (Andalusian Young Flamenco Artists competition)

The most remarkable thing about María José is her humility and her interest in learning. She has a clean, brilliant, strong voice with plenty of nuances. She offers in her shows a very typical flamenco fraseo. She knows all the cantes she plays perfectly following an orthodox, pure line.

In addition to her artistic career, María José has studied a three- year degree in Logopedia -speech therapy- at the University of Granada, Spain.
